Value Added

The two and a half day event I attended last weekend has definitely broadened my views on issues pertaining to persons with disabilities. My first encounter with a PWD took place on the way to the venue which was in Bangi. A fellow passenger was living with cerebral palsy, he was on a motorised wheelchair and couldn't turn his head to the left. It was quite challenging to start a conversation with him initially as I was sitting on his left, but as we started talking I learned to adapt to his condition.

Volunteers and fellow participants were always there to provide assistance to those who travelled alone. My room mates were two blind ladies who were in their late forties. I had the opportunity to observe how the blind went about their daily live. Such as how they have a special software installed in their mobiles to enable voice recognition, the Braille watches they wore, the cash list they used to differentiate the various Ringgit notes. During our two night stay Adriana also helped them to check their dressing, hair and make up and sometimes meals. We had become friends by the time we left Bangi.

The speakers were consisted of Doctors, Professors, Physiotherapists who specialised in their respective fields such as various medical disciplines, Rehabilitation, Parasitology and Architectural. Government Officials from Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Department and officials from local government offices including town planning besides these there were speakers from Singapore. There were also representatives from NGOs such as Persatuan Dyslexia Malaysia and Persatuan Syndrome Down Malaysia and a lawyer to talk about the legislative and policies especially on Persons with Disabilities Act 2008.
