在很多人的印象里，意大利酒一直以来都站在法国葡萄酒的影子里，而且把他作为法国酒相似的替代品。事实上，意大利酒有着相比法国更悠久的酿酒历史，过去是罗马军队把葡萄园带到了整个西欧。
意大利有着世界上70%多可用于酿酒的葡萄品种，100多种特有葡萄品种，是世界上葡萄酒风格最多，差别最大的一个国家。所以意大利是一个可以提供你全新的葡萄酒体验的国度。当今的意大利种植了807000公顷葡萄，葡萄酒平均年产量约在53800000000升左右，出口至世界各地。
分级制度
为了能更好的保持和发扬传统的葡萄酒风格，意大利制定了相对法国更严格的分级制度。
日常餐酒VDT（白葡萄酒，玫瑰红葡萄酒，红葡萄酒）：当我们看到“日常餐用白葡萄酒”或者“日常餐用红葡萄酒”的标签，就意味着该葡萄酒是没有任何产地说明的白葡萄或红葡萄生产的，因此是一种很泛泛的，没任何要求想法的，也没有什么特征的葡萄酒。
地方餐酒（IGT）：当葡萄酒的标签上标明了“TOSCANO Indicazione Geografica
Tipica托斯卡纳的IGT红葡萄酒”，则说明这是一款要表现托斯卡纳特征的葡萄酒。该酒应当是产自托斯卡纳区域的，并要与法律规定的托斯卡纳地域范围相吻合。
应该注意，与可以用意大利任意地区的葡萄酿制的“日常餐酒VDT”所不同的是，地方餐酒IGT要求使用法规限定地区采摘的葡萄比例至少要达到85%。比如，我们看到的说明特别地域的标签上是“TOSCANA Indicazione Geografica Tipica
Cabernet Sauvignon托斯卡纳IGT的赤霞珠葡萄酒），就是说酿制该葡萄酒的葡萄85%以上是来自于托斯卡纳地区的赤霞珠。
